The UK taxi and private hire industry continues to grow, but the latest figures suggest competition is increasing just as quickly.
New Department for Transport (DfT) statistics show there were approximately 342,300 licensed taxis and private hire vehicles in England as of 1 April 2026, up 9% compared with 2024.
Private hire is driving much of that growth. England now has around 290,000 licensed private hire vehicles (PHVs), an increase of 13% since 2024, while the number of licensed taxis fell by 7% to approximately 52,300.
Growth outside London is particularly significant, with around 196,600 PHVs now licensed outside the capital, a 20% increase in just two years.
For established operators, these figures highlight a simple challenge: more businesses and vehicles are competing for passengers, drivers, corporate accounts and local market share.
Being available is no longer enough.
Passengers increasingly expect easy app and online booking, a strong Google presence, positive reviews and a recognisable brand. Local operators also have an advantage that national platforms can struggle to replicate: genuine connections with the communities they serve.
The operators that stand out will be those that combine reliable transport with strong branding, effective digital marketing and a convenient booking experience.
The private hire market may be expanding, but operators still need to make sure passengers choose them.
At TaxiSolutions, we help taxi and private hire businesses strengthen their digital presence, reach more passengers and build brands that stand out in an increasingly competitive industry.
